One of the things she finds growing near her home in Israel is grown a lot around my home here in Southern California: the natal plum, or num-num. Originally from South Africa, this aromatic shrub is often used for hedges here in the L.A. area. The flowers have a jasmine-like scent and are lovely. When they drop off, they leave behind a fruit that has always reminded me of a rose hip.
Ronit's Post explains that these fruits are in fact edible. Not just edible, but tasty. She gives directions on how to harvest them and use them. And guess what? They are just going into season now. I saw one the other day and picked it...but then I left it in the car overnight and it was kinda squishy by morning. If I see some more and taste one (remember to wash very well first!), I'll tell you what I think.
